  Sound is the most universal and natural medium for the transmission and reception of any language. The ways sounds are produced and combined to form  spoken expressions differ from one language to another.    English language is an intonational language while Nigeria languages are largely tonal; that is why the Nigerian spoken English is highly affected by mother tongue. Proficiency in WRITTEN ENGLISH doesnot guarantee good SPOKEN ENGLISH. Both of them have to be consciously learnt.    One major reason stands out, when we pronounce words, phrases and sentences well; we help listeners to hears us easily and understand us better. We are therefore able to SAY WHAT WE MEAN AND MEAN WHAT WE SAY!

   Communication is an important part of human co-existence. Sounds and tones are  important aspect of  communication. WHAT you say , is as important as HOW you say it.   English as originally originated from England is now an international language for communication. English is spoken by over 3 milliom people in the world, and out of every 5 speakers only 1 is a native.     Do you know that ENGLISH AS SHE IS SPOKEN now, is been shaped by the non-native speakers more than the native speakers? The current difference in the way English is spoken, new slangs, and idiomatic expression is creating a barrier among both native and non-native speakers of the language.
