Sound is the most universal and natural medium for the transmission and reception of any language. The ways sounds are produced and combined to form spoken expressions differ from one language to another.
English language is an intonational language while Nigeria languages are largely tonal; that is why the Nigerian spoken English is highly affected by mother tongue. Proficiency in WRITTEN ENGLISH doesnot guarantee good SPOKEN ENGLISH. Both of them have to be consciously learnt.
One major reason stands out, when we pronounce words, phrases and sentences well; we help listeners to hears us easily and understand us better. We are therefore able to SAY WHAT WE MEAN AND MEAN WHAT WE SAY!
